January 1998 Newsletter
Dear Friends,
A RETROSPECTIVE GLANCE AT MAY 1997 - DECEMBER 1997
Financial picture:
Our treasurer, Mr. A. Baskaran, who has diligently automated the fiscal process as a PC based
application, is now able to perform a quick budgetary analysis for planning purposes. As per a
recent exercise, he informed us that the currents level of income from regular and occassional
sources allows to break even with the operating expense. The demand loan of $42500 was reduced
by $2500 in December 1997. It is also noteworthy that the arrears in property taxes which
stood at about $9000 in May 1997, when the new Board took ovre, have now all been cleared.
New tenant:
Welcome aboard John Notley's Karate School. They have filled the vacuum created by the departure
of the Children's Ballet Studio. This development has brought significant relief to our financial
obligations. Our sincere thanks go out to Mr. Chan Chandramouli, past president of the ICCC Board
of Directors, and Mr. John Ziegerman, the real estate broker, for enabling this development.
Lottery:
The ICCC is also benefitting in excess of $6000 per year, on an on-going basis, through a charity
lottery run for us by the International Tobacco Shop owned by Mr. A. Sahni. We thank Mr. Sahni for
this generous deed. We also thank the ICCC members; Mr. Roshan Sachdeva and Mr Shyam Khubchandani
for their continued administrative support.
Painting and flooring:
Recently, the Centre has received a bright and clean look thanks to the efforts of the volunteers
from the Sai Baba group who carried out the painting and related clean-up activities. The ICCC
Board expresses its sincere gratitude to all the participants, as well as to Mr. Anil Mody, for
his generosity in supplying the required paint. Special mention should also be made of Mr.
Bhagwan Gupta's dedication to the project.
Operating and maintenance:
We would like to thank the following for their help:
- Mrs. Laila Khan for managing the bookings of the Centre
- Mr. Shyam Khubchandani and Mrs. Aleyamma Samuel for managing "key services"
- Mr. Rafiq Khan for offering paint for the floor. (Volunteers for painting basement floor needed!)
- Mr. Anil Mehta for donating the cover the printing costs of the ICCC receipts
- All the advertisers for their support
New Life Members:
We would like to welcome two new life members to the ICCC; Mr. Bharat Rudra and Dr. Surendra D.
Acharya.
A VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Financial planning:
As stated earlier, the ICCC now has regular monthly sources of revenue that
cover the operating expenses, and at times, leave a modest balance. The Board will make all
efforts to maintain those revenue sources and use the surplus towards reducing the outstanding
debt of $40000.
We have appealed to the city to reduce our tax rate. The Board
members will continue in their efforts to achieve this goal.
Your participation is crucial:
Planning several fund-raising events is in progress. These may include a play, a ghazal evening,
and a dinner in 1998. Besides offering opportunities for enjoyment and fellowship, these events
will help us in reducing the debt. However, the success of these events depends on you, the
members. The Board is counting on you to participate in these events, with your family and friends.
Do we need a new Centre?
Our community has grown substantially in size and is now a vibrant and dynamic group with a wide
variety of social, cultural and recreational activities. We, as a community, ICCC members and
non-members alike, must decide whether the existing community centre is adequate to serve our
evolving needs. The Board would like to know, from you, your views on this matter. If the existing
Centre is not adequate, then we should be planning for a new Centre. Please fill out the
survey available on this site and send it electronically to us, so that we can decide and plan for the
future.
Nityanand Varma
President of ICCC
